Pretzels, my favorite food

The pretzel is the namesake of this site, a personal motif I keep coming back to. The shapes here are injection-molded pretzels in a dozen colors: palm-sized, somewhere between a charm and a craft prop.

A pretzel is a satisfying object to design around. It's a topological knot drawn from a single line, simple enough to recognize at a glance and complex enough that hand-making one always feels a little like an accomplishment. The contrast between the three tight loops and the soft body is part of what makes the form so legible: there's nothing else it could be.

The collection runs through the standard injection-molding pipeline: a metal mold tool with the pretzel cavity machined in, pigmented thermoplastic shot batch after batch in different colors. Pretzels show up in my work as a recurring signature: the chosen mascot, the photo prop, the pixel icon in the corner of every page on this site.
